When I first got accepted to medical school, one of the things I was most excited for was being able to wear scrubs. (So silly, but I’m sure many others can relate.) Wearing scrubs meant looking like an actual medical student and being one step closer to becoming a doctor. Plus, is there anything better than basically wearing your PJ’s to school/work every day?! Little did I know that not all scrubs are equal. When it was time for me to order my first pair of scrubs, I went on Amazon and bought the cheapest pair I could find. After reading the reviews, I decided to buy a navy and a royal blue set in the smallest size they sold. Two days later (thank you Amazon Prime!), I received my first pair of scrubs and immediately put them on. The fabric was stiff and itchy, the scrubs were way too big for me, and I looked like I was drowning in a potato sack, but I didn’t care. They were my first pair and I felt SO legit wearing them.
That first pair of scrubs were my dedicated anatomy scrubs and the poor things were put through the ringer. By the end of the lab, I had worn those scrubs about 4 times/week for 5 months without washing them once (gross I know). They were soaked in every bodily fluid you can imagine and reeked of formaldehyde. Despite all this, I still wasn’t able to “break them in” and they fit just as poorly on the last day of anatomy as they did on the first. Needless to say I tossed them at the end of the year and never looked back.
I’ve since discovered wayyyy better scrub brands and have even found a few that will likely be lifetime favorites. One of these brands is the Maevn Uniforms EON Collection. Their EON scrubs are made with COOLMAX® fabric technology which employs specially engineered fibers designed to draw moisture away from the skin, keeping the you cool and dry. On the Maevn website, they claim that their EON scrubs are wrinkle resistant with minimal shrinkage. They also state that the material is lightweight, soft, and breathable allowing for both performance and a professional look. Maevn kindly sent me two sets of scrubs to review which I’ve described in detail below. (If you absolutely can’t wait to hear the verdict and don’t care to read about the details, skip down to the My Overall Thoughts section at the bottom!)
Size: XS, Color: Pewter
This top features a basic v-neck scrub top with mesh side panels and plenty of pockets. Of the two tops I received, this one was my favorite. Often times, scrub tops can look boxy on my petite frame, but that wasn’t the case here. The fit was very flattering and gave a tapered look at the waist. The top also looks great either tucked in or out. I especially loved that there were 4 pockets in total: two in the front and one on each side. One of the side pockets has a zipper which is perfect for carrying your driver’s license, credit card, and anything else you don’t want to lose. The top also has mesh panels on the back and sides which kept me cool and sweat-free.
Size: XS, Color: Pewter
These bottoms have a full elastic waistband along with a drawstring. The pants have two pockets in the front and two pockets in the back. The back pockets have zippers and are another great place to keep any small items you don’t want to lose. I really liked the fit and feel of these pants and felt comfortable wearing them for 8-10 hours. The only complaint I have about these pants is that after wearing them for about 14 hours, the waistband left some impression marks on my waist which got kind of itchy after taking them off. Still, this isn’t enough to stop me from ordering another pair of these pants.
Size: XS, Color: Wine (LOVE LOVE LOVE this color! But FYI, the Wine color stained the white tank top I was wearing underneath, but I had no issues with the Pewter. I would recommend washing them before wearing to prevent this.)
This top is your basic 2-pocket scrub top, but better fitting and more flattering. It actually has 4 pockets: two large front pockets, a smaller pocket within the right front pocket, and a small welt pocket at the waist with a triangle ring for attaching an ID badge. The pocket within the front pocket and the small welt pocket are both just large enough to hold an iPhone 6. One of the larger front pockets also has 3 utility loops which could be used to hook keys or hold pens in place. This top looks great untucked, but looks a tiny bit awkward when tucked in. You can see in my photos that the front pockets come up a little higher on the waist so that when tucked, the top of the pockets peek out. If you like to wear your scrubs tucked in, I would suggest opting for the Sporty Mesh Panel Top instead. Unfortunately that style does not come in as many colors as the V-Neck Pocket Top.
Size: XS, Color: Wine
These pants were by far my favorite out of the 4 items I received. They feature an embroidered Eon logo waistband with a matching drawstring which give them a cool and unique look. They have two front pockets (one of which has a smaller pocket contained within), two back pockets, and a side cargo pocket with a scissor pocket. Like the other items I mentioned, the fit was both comfortable and flattering.
My Overall Thoughts
- Lightweight, soft, breathable fabric
- Comfortable, non-constricting and easy to move around in
- True to size
- Flattering fit
- Great quality
- Retained shape after washing
- V-Neck Pocket Top looks slightly awkward when tucked in
- The waistband on the Sporty Mesh Panel Pant left imprints on my waist after wearing for a long period of time
- Wine color stained a white undershirt I was wearing
- Slight shrinkage after washing (almost undetectable, but shrinkage nonetheless)
The EON line is a great option for anyone looking to buy a pair of comfortable and flattering scrubs. The scrubs are true to size and the fit is very flattering. (For reference, I am 5’4″ and 115 lbs and the XS tops and bottoms fit perfectly.) The quality of these scrubs is also lightyears ahead of that first pair I ordered off Amazon so many months ago.
I completely agree with their claims of the scrubs being lightweight, soft, and breathable allowing for both performance and a professional look. The COOLMAX® fabric technology was really put to the test when I wore the Pewter Sporty Mesh Panel set while shadowing in the ED. I was running around on my feet and constantly trying to keep up with the resident for 8 hours, and not once did I break a sweat.
One thing I have to note is that the scrubs are wrinkle resistant as Maevn claims, but they are not completely wrinkle proof. When I first received my scrubs they were wrinkled, but after quickly ironing them once, they did not easily wrinkle again. I think if they are folded for a long period of time or bunched up in a pile at the bottom of the laundry basket, they can be expected to get a little wrinkly.
Overall, I really love these scrubs and will be purchasing another pair in the future. If I were to recommend a set it would be the Sporty Mesh Panel Top and the Waistband 7-Pocket Cargo Pant. Let me know in the comments if you own a pair of scrubs from the Maevn EON line and what you love most about them!
