When Andrew and I moved into our apartment in July, I had a long list of DIY projects I wanted to tackle which included things like refinishing our wooden dressers, building a gallery wall for our office, and creating some DIY canvas art for our bedroom. Ambitious. School started in August and those tasks quickly landed at the bottom of my to-do list. It wasn’t until this past weekend that I finally found some time to tackle one of these projects. I pulled out some acrylic paints that had been sitting around since my high school art class days and three 16″ x 20″ canvases I had bought during a BOGO free sale at Michaels and started painting.
I wasn’t really sure what I was aiming for when I started, but in less than an hour I had three abstract pieces sitting in front of me. All I did to achieve this modern abstract piece was paint vertical strokes on the canvases using black and white paint. Occasionally I mixed the blacks and whites to create
fifty different shades of gray. They almost look blue in the photos, but they’re more gray in person. The hardest part about the entire project was hanging them up evenly above our bed. Now that they’re hung up, I’m so happy with the way it turned out! Having a piece of art above our bed makes the space feel a lot more put together and the fact that I painted it myself makes it feel even more special. This project would also be great for a dorm room or pretty much anyone looking to decorate a space on a budget. I already had the paint, paintbrushes, and hanging tools so all I really had to pay for was the canvases which cost less than $10. Even if I had needed to buy all of the supplies, it wouldn’t have cost me more than $20.
Now that I’ve crossed DIY canvas art off of my apartment to-do list, I can’t wait to get started on my next project. I’m always looking for new ideas, so please share any ideas with me in the comments below. Also, let me know if any of you make a DIY canvas art piece of your own. I’d love to see your spin on it!
